There’s something effortlessly calming about an olive tree. With its soft silvery-green leaves and sculptural branches, it brings a sense of quiet elegance into any space, whether it’s a sunny living room, balcony, or patio.
The good news? You don’t need a full orchard to enjoy one. Olive trees adapt beautifully to life in pots, making them perfect for modern homes. With the right care, your tree can thrive, grow steadily, and become a long-lasting feature in your space.
Choosing the Right Spot: Light is Everything
Olive trees are sun-lovers. To keep yours happy indoors or in a container:
Place it in a spot with at least 6–8 hours of sunlight daily
A north-facing window (in South Africa) or bright patio works best
Good airflow is essential, avoid cramped corners
If your space lacks strong natural light, your tree may survive, but it won’t truly thrive.
Feeding Your Potted Olive Tree
Unlike trees planted in the ground, potted olives rely entirely on you for nutrients.
At Planting:
Start strong by mixing:
50% compost
50% quality potting soil
Add 5 handfuls of biogenic organic all-purpose pellets into the mix to give your tree a nutrient-rich foundation.
Ongoing Feeding:
Consistency is key for potted trees:
Every 3 weeks: 3 handfuls of biogenic organic pellets
This steady feeding routine:
Encourages healthy leaf growth
Supports root development in limited soil space
Keeps your tree resilient year-round
Think of it as small, regular meals rather than occasional heavy feeding.
Watering: Finding the Balance
Potted olive trees prefer deep but infrequent watering.
Water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom
Allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry out before watering again
Always water in the morning
In warmer months, you may water more frequently. In cooler months, reduce watering as growth slows.
Important: Never let your pot sit in standing water—good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
Repotting & Root Care
As your olive tree grows, its roots will need more space.
Repot every 2–3 years
Choose a pot slightly larger each time
Ensure the container has proper drainage holes
Refreshing the soil during repotting also replenishes nutrients and improves structure.
Seasonal Care at Home
Even indoors, your olive tree follows a natural rhythm:
Spring & Summer: Active growth, feed regularly and water more often
Autumn (March–April): Growth slows, maintain feeding but begin reducing water
Winter: Trees rest, minimal watering, no heavy feeding
Pests are far less active during winter, making this a good time to simply monitor and maintain general health.
A Living Piece of the Mediterranean
An olive tree in a pot is more than just a plant—it’s a long-term companion. With the right care, it brings structure, calm, and a touch of the Mediterranean into your everyday life.
At Trees Of Eden, it’s not just about growing trees—it’s about helping you grow something lasting.
Whether it lives on your balcony or beside your favourite window, your olive tree becomes part of your home’s story.
